I run sales and partner development for rPath (http://www.rpath.com/corp/) and am having more fun than one should be allowed to working!
I have been with the company since we launched in January 2006. Many of us here at rPath were previously with Red Hat where we successfully moved Red Hat from being a retail, boxed product Linux distribution into mainstream enterprise data centers. As an example, I ran sales for the western half of the U.S. (everything west of the Mississippi River) for Red Hat until mid-2005.
As another example, our founder / CTO, Erik Troan, was the first engineer ever hired by Red Hat. He saw Red Hat Linux through its first 10 product releases. He is also the inventor of Red Hat Package Manager, commonly know as RPM.
Here at rPath, our intellectual property is next-generation software packaging, release management, and version control technology for complete system definitions. Imagine a combination of the best of source code management (SCM) principles with the best of software packaging principles, and one starts to comprehend rPath.

As of the beginning of 2009, we have had a fair amount of success. A little over 60 clients mainly in the ISV and OEM space...clients such as EMC and Cognos (the latter now part of IBM). These ISVs use rPath to easily create hardware, virtual (any hypervisor), or cloud (any cloud) appliances. We also provide technology allowing the ISV to perform full application lifecycle management functions for their integrated, dependency-resolved system definitions. These functions include actions such as automated policy implementation at build time as well as automated maintenance and updates for production systems.
What has been really exciting here at rPath as of late is that we are gaining great traction with enterprise application developers and data centers! As IT operations environments continue to become more complex (hardware, virtual, internal cloud, external cloud, etc.) and as application developers continue to use an ever-growing set of frameworks and components to get their jobs done (J2EE, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Spring, etc.), rPath is becoming increasingly valuable for managing this complexity.
rPath is bringing enterprises policy-based automation to the creation and application lifecycle management of full, dependency-resolved system definitions for any target...physical, virtual, or cloud. Doing so greatly reduces the time, cost, and risk of complex application delivery. We are also helping enterprises more quickly take advantage of high-ROI technologies such as virtualization and cloud computing in an IT policy compliant manner.
rPath is an exciting place to be these days! If you are interested in learning more, please get in contact with me.

Constructing and Managing Appliances for the Cloud
This is a paper presented at USENIX in June 2009 by Matt Wilson, one of rPath's founding engineers. Matt wrote the Anaconda installer for Linux. The paper is on constructing and managing appliances for cloud deployments from repositories of reusable components.
